Today I went to West Chicago again, this time to catch the NRHS special from Chicago to Cedar Rapids.  It was running a few hours late, but that was no problem as there was plenty of other trains to keep me busy.  I saw several UP freights, a couple of Metra trains and five trains on the EJ&E.  Here are a few of my pictures of them, ending with the NRHS special.

UP AC4400CW #6709 brings up the rear of a coal train.

Brand new UP SD70ACe #8748 heads an eastbound intermodal train.

GTW SD40-2 #5936 leads a train on the EJ&E.

UP ES44 #7859 on an eastbound train.

UP SD70ACe #8540 and SD90MAC #8117 duck under the soon to be removed signal bridge with a westbound manifest train.

IC SD70 #1036 is the second unit on a northbound train on the EJ&E.

UP AC4400CW #5656 leads a westbound coal train.

CN C40-8W #2173 heads northbound.

CN C40-8 #2101 (a former C&NW locomotive) also heads north.

CN C40-8W is the second unit on the train.

Here comes the NRHS special with UP SD70ACe #1995 in the lead.

Saturday, June 9, 2012 was a great day to be railfanning in the Chicago area.  First up was Franklin Park Railroad Daze, which I must say is, by far, the best train show I've ever been to.  This was the 16th year in a row that I have attended it.  It was well attended this year by railroad equipment and people.  Equipment from Amtrak, Metra, Belt Railway of Chicago, Canadian National, Indiana Harbor Belt, and Union Pacific were on display, 15 pieces in all.

Included was an Amtrak Horizon Cafe Car, Amtrak's only remaining dome car, a Metra cab car and rebuilt F40PH-3 locomotive, a Belt Railway Genset locomotive and caboose, 2 Illinois Central business cars and an E9, a Canadian National business car and SD70-2, and Indiana Harbor Belt Genset locomotive, 2 Union Pacific SD70ACe's and a Union Pacific ES44.  One of the UP SD70ACe's was the Chicago and North Western heritage unit.  The other two UP units were brand new.

Then later in the day I went to West Chicago to catch Union Pacific's special business train that ran from Chicago to the Illinois Railway Museum and back.  The afternoon train had three business cars (Feather River, Texas Eagle, and Columbine) bracketed by two locomotives.  One was a brand new ES44 and the other was Chicago and North Western C44-9W #8701, one of only 2 remaining C&NW units on the UP roster, and the only one currently in operation.

Below you will find many of my pictures from the day.  I hope you enjoy seeing them!

Recently I was thinking that I have about 50,000 train pictures and most of them will never be seen by anyone. So I decided to start a blog where I can post pictures from my train watching to share. If you have any suggestions, comments or questions, please feel free to let me know. Thank you for looking!

I went to the Fox River Trolley Museum in South Elgin. I was hoping to take a ride on one of their trolley's, but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. North Shore 715 had become disabled blocking the tracks and curtailing normal operations. However, I was still able to photograph a portion of their nice collection.
